Faced with unprecedented linguistic diversity, the justice system is no longer able to cope. Trials are postponed due to a lack of interpreters, and spending is skyrocketing... In the courts, the language barrier is becoming a daily headache.

As migratory flows intensify, courtroom harmony is faltering. Trials are postponed due to lack of interpreters, the use of translation tools, and skyrocketing court costs... As a reminder, foreigners (7.4% of the population) are involved in nearly 20% of criminal acts across the country.

"It's laborious," laments Rachel Beck, national secretary of the Union Syndicale des Magistrates. "We need interpreters more and more often, but it's really difficult to find them. And especially to have them available when we need them. Even if, when we start to have a lot of cases involving certain nationalities, we end up building up a network ," she confides to the JDD. The 8,500 professionals registered on the lists of the courts of appeal and the Court of Cassation are considered by the State as occasional collaborators of the public service.
